This bike is not for anyone who does any serious distance riding, and it's not really for anyone who isn't mechanical either. I returned mine after a few days.
It was delivered fast and I put it together easily enough. The light for the front isn't made for the handlebars, but it is powered by the front wheel, which is cool, even though it looks stupid. The bike's components are poor quality, but I got it for the chain-less aspect, so I was OK with that. My initial feel for the bike was that it was an alright ride. I did switch the seat out right away though. The seat it comes with is not really a comfort seat. The gear shifting is smooth, but you still can't shift too quickly, much like a standard chain bike. Mine did make a strange clicking noise in 4th gear and this clicking got progressively faster as the gears went up. It rode fine though. I rode to and from work a couple times and it was fine. This ride though is only 3 miles and rather flat.
I was concerned about the noise, and I also wanted to know what it took to change the back tire. I also knew that my local bike shop would know nothing about this thing and that I would get charged by the hour for them to figure it out. I know those guys. So, I did it myself. That was when I ran into the first major design flaw. You can't simply loosen the nuts and brakes on the wheel and pull it off. You need a wrench for the nuts and a screwdriver for the gear casing, and then there's this weird trick to getting the gear cable off. I ended up disassembling and reassembling the entire gear set-up. That was when I found out that the factory had actually cut the gear cable wrong, which is possibly why it made that clicking noise. But, my point is, it was a pain. I would hate to have to do that tire change on a cold fall morning.
I thought I might be able to live with it anyways. I did manage to get the wheel off and on OK. Then, once I took it for a longer ride with some hills, I saw the biggest flaw with this chain-less design. When you're pedaling, you lose a lot of energy, and you'll feel it. The bike just requires you to work a heck of a lot more than you would with a regular chain bike, and, no, downshifting doesn't help. It must have to do with the internal gear system. It's horrible for any distance riding.
One thing nice about this bike is the rack it comes with. It's one of those seat-post racks and it actually stays in place. It's not a good enough reason to buy this thing though.
