(More customer reviews)To start with the good, the shifting precision of these cables (when new) absolutely lives up to the hype. Shifts are precise and there's no sign of cable drag. That's what you'd expect from a set of cables this expensive, and they deliver. But that said, they don't deliver for long, because the durability of this product is just awful. The plastic coating on the cables begins to fray at contact points within about 1000 miles. For me, by 1500 the cables were hosed, with long sections of the coating stripped off at the BB cable guide and at the rear derailleur. Beyond degrading shifting due to the untimely exit of the slick coating, the little bits of pilled-up cable coating had began enter the housing by the time I replaced this stuff, gumming up the shifting even worse. Now, a short lifespan for the inner cables might be acceptable, if Gore sold replacements for cheap. But they don't sell them to home mechanics at all. Last but not least, installation in the first place is a bear, because these come double-ended Campy/Shimano, meaning you cut off the end you are not using and watch the cable instantly start to fray. This is annoying but not awful for Shimano, and I can't speak to Campy, but trying to route a fraying steel cable with a coating that has a propensity to peel off through a SRAM shifter is an absolute nightmare.
I'm sure if you're a sponsored pro with a team mechanic these cables would be your go-to, as shifting really is great when they are new, but the durability is just awful and the price is exorbitant. If you pay for and maintain your own equipment, look elsewhere.
